When we were in school some of our classmates would give up a hard prison term memorising spellings, and the teachers would invariably lose exertion with them. These poor kids would be branded dumb or work-shy and the teachers would be on their case all the time. Not for a second did it strike them that the infuriating students might have been genuinely trying their best and may have been suffering from erudition difficulty beyond their control; no one bring in that they deserved sympathy and attention sort of than punishment.
Mercifully, by the time my kids were in school, consciousness about erudition issues was gradually increasing, change surface though it was still particular to certain private schools. pot began to realise that perfectly intelligent kids drive out have learning difficulties, which could make it difficult for them to read and write. Eventually it was established that with appropriate coaching children, who a couple of decades earlier would have been push aside as stupid, could be taught to cope effectively with their disabilities.
This realisation was limited to a few privileged children who went to elite schools, where they were exposed to the availability of remedial help. But the students of public schools continued to remain unaware of this teaching mechanism.
In fact, even today, many children studying in public schools are treated in a rather harsh manner; their teachers oblivious that other teaching methods can be employed to ease their difficulties.
Ironically, it was not the education welkin but a Bollywood flick, Taray Zameen Par that created high level sense about dyslexia, a language-based learning difficulty, making it a known term even for the common man.
Over the years, as awareness increases, parents of suffering children are coming to terms with the fact that their kids remove special help, and that it is not something to be embarrassed about.
