Jim Crow was a call up used for African Americans that derived from a stage performance by a white man named Thomas D. Rice called lead off Jim Crow, in which he put makeup on his face to appear like an African-American and danced around and sing songs. When Southern legislatures passed laws about so-called inferior races at the conclusion of the 19th century, they were dubbed Jim Crow laws.
The Jim Crow laws were introduced firstly in the Confed timete states of the U.S. but later spread to border states. They essentially denied disconsolate state of basic human rights and placed them firmly in the category of second class citizen.
A few examples of Jim Crow laws:
1. Separate water fountains (the same water fountains for everyone would instil a sense of equality)
2. No person or corporation shall drive any white female nurse to nurse in wards or rooms in hospitals, either public or private, in which Negro men are placed.
3. The marriage of a person of Caucasian blood with a Negro, Mongolian, Malay, or Hindoo shall be null and void.
4. All persons licensed to conduct the clientele of selling beer or wine...
shall serve either white race exclusively or coloured people exclusively and shall not sell to the two races within the same room at any time.
5. Separate schools shall be maintained for the children of the white and colorize races.
