3D Printing And Its Impacts On Stop-Motion

The quirkiness of stop-motion animation has drawn me into this serviceman.(Purves, 2010, p.8) This quirky world, as depicted in short films such as More and Madame Tutli-Putli, is like a tactile alternative human beings where big emotions, drama, tension and humour can all be conveyed through what are clearly pieces of brass, wood, fabric, silicon and clay (Purves, 2010, p.80). It allow be my dream to create this world, where stories are told in a very powerful way through my creationspuppets, support or sets. I do not plan to terminal point myself to a certain range of stop-motion modelmaking. In fact, I wish well to explore and thus dabble in all forms of it, which includes claymation, puppets and base objects; and also in different formats of stop-motion such as bear films, short films to advertisements. An area that I am particularly interested in is the making of puppet armatures, and at this moment, I accept in the years to come, I get to specialise in that.

I have chosen to discuss the issue of 3D printing as a new disruptive technology. 3D printing is a very broad term for this technology, and it appears on a lower floor different names, due to the many competing.

3D printing was first used in the manufacturing industry in the late 1980s, for rapid prototyping. (Wikipedia, 2011d) With improving executing and decreasing cost, it is now being used to make entire products and has reached many other industries: jewellery, footwear, industrial design, architecture, engineering and construction, automotive, aerospace, dental and medical checkup industries. (The Economist, 2011; Wikipedia, 2011a)
