Henry Wiggen is a star hummock for the New York Mammoths of professional baseball. He is a valuable impostor to his manager, Dutch, but is in a dispute with the teams ownership for a young contract and more money. One of Henrys teammates and best friends on the team is a catcher, Bruce Pearson, a player of limited dexterity and intellect. Bruce refers to Henry by the nickname Author because the brainy hummock once wrote a book, although Bruce misunderstands the origin of the name and, with his thick southern black marketl, often calls him Arthur instead. Henry is married to Holly and the two of them are ardent of Bruce. So it comes as devastating news when Bruce learns he has a blood disease and is terminally ill. The team knows nothing rough this and Dutch is preparing to bench or release Bruce in estimation of a hot young prospect, country boy Piney Woods. So management is amazed and confused with Henry agrees to a new contract on one condition that Bruce stay and play. Dutch tries everything he can think of to make Henry light upon why he insists that Bruce catch for him. In the meantime, the Mammoths are losing games and subscribe to a low morale, teammates quarreling among themselves.

Complicating things further is that Bruce wants Henry to help draw up a will in which everything goes to a woman named Katie; someone who Henry can tell is interested but in the money. One day when a player picks on Bruce, a frustrated Henry blurts out the fact that Bruce is dying. He asks that it remain confidential, but quickly teammates and Dutch all date out. They begin to treat Bruce differently and each other as well, and the teams play and mood both improve. A trip to tabun is made so that Bruce can visit his parents one determination time. He passes away quietly, and Henry vows that he will criticize others no more.
