The Odyssey

Analyzing The Odyssey

1-5-05

The Odyssey, by Homer, has many different themes. This paper will be covering three concepts in particular. The first-class honours degree curiosity in the epic poem is the fact that Odysseus, the main character, is seen as both sure and unfaithful to his wife. Also, the control of events in the lives of the mortals by the gods brings to abstemious the concept of limited free will. And last, the language of different scenarios, i.e. battles vs. lively occasions, lends itself to glorifying deadly and gruesome struggles. Homer has a unique vogue of devising the plot, giving mixed signals and paradoxes, but it all salutary gives to the realism of this amazing piece of literature.
Odysseus faithfulness for his wife is questionable. In the first book, you find that he is sleeping with a cleaning woman named Kalypso, a sea nymph. Her ladyship Kalypso clung to him in her sea-hollowed cavesâ€"a nymph, immortal and about beautiful, who craved him for her own(Homer, lns. 22-25, pg. 1). Although he himself does not want to hang on with her, he does not resist her love, and continues to sleep with her for 7 years. When Odysseus is first encountered, in Book 5, he is pining away for his wife, genus Penelope. When he is set free and offered immortality, he declines, because of the love he has for his wife.
