I.Imagine an existence consumed by violence and despair. The Sunflower delves us into this existence through the eyes of the author, Simon Wiesenthal. Imprisoned in a Jewish concentration camp, Wiesenthal endures a nightmarish day-to-day existence, having anomic everything including faith in human morality, and the existence of a kind-hearted god. After witnessing countless capital punishments of innocent people, Wiesenthal has lost all hope, unexpended for any sign of token that would restore it, stating that at that sentence we were ready to see symbols in everything. It was a eon overriding for mysticism and superstition (Wiesenthal). While be transported to his new lock area, Wiesenthal passes a Nazi graveyard in which he finds this symbol in the form of sunflowers, which were jetting out of each Nazi grave. Shortly after, Wiesenthal is summoned to the room of a dying Nazi. Bewildered and curious to the request, Wiesenthal accepts, entering the room of the dying man. Wiesenthals experience consequently takes another shocking turn: the dying Nazi asks for his forgiveness. His time was running out, and he indirect requested forgiveness from a Jew forward his final judgment.



Previous to his mortal injury, the SS man participated in the murder of countless innocent Jews and one incident in ill-tempered torments his mind, where he and other Nazi soldiers burned a firm full of Jewish citizens to the ground, and shot down any who well-tried to escape. It is at this point that Wiesenthal is plagued with his moral problem: the possibilities and limits of forgiveness. Does he thrust the right to forgive? Doing so would mean forgiving him on behalf of those who suffered, without even knowing the victims of the incident, let alone the perpetrator.
