junto's book, in contrast, is firmly rooted in a champion of reality. It is, after all, "based on historical realities" (Crew Acknowledgement page). Crew writes about a Cambodian teenager who flees her homeland and its stately war to live in the United States, where she discovers not paradise exactly an entirely new set of overwhelming problems. Her liveliness may no longer be in danger, but her identity certainly is.
Crew portrays Sundara not as a superhero-in-the-making (in contrast to Ende and his portrayal of Bastian), but as a rattling real and vulnerable two-year-old woman-in-the-making. The book immediately shows Sundara to be a caring girl in her treatment of her aunty and uncle's newborn baby, but that peaceful scene is suddenly rupture apart by the coming of the Khmer Rouge as the state of matter is thrown into renewed warfare.
The story then shifts to a clock four years later when Sundara is about to hear her poesy read aloud to her high school English class. She is shown to be far more sensitive, aware and serious about conduct than her generally self-obsessed and superficial Ameri cannister classmates.
Her poem includes such lines as the following:
This swear is by chance what allows her to open to the affection of Jonathan. Still, it is not a fantasy-based bop, but instead a realistic acceptance of a greater hope for the future. As she tells Jonathan:
Of course, the underlying purpose of the book is to have young readers identify with this young hero who begins the book hounded by different children, isolated from other human beings, and frightened of life, and who finally emerges a courageous and triumphant hero.
